Nameserver Health Checker

Inspect your domain’s nameservers, authoritative SOA responses and consistency.

Enter a domain only, without https:// or a path. Queries run from this website’s server.

Results reflect a limited check from this hosting server, not a worldwide DNS audit. The tool may be unable to test DNS when hosting blocks outbound UDP port 53. It cannot guarantee that every resolver sees the same records.

The checker performs DNS queries from our website’s hosting server. Results represent a limited diagnostic test, not a complete global DNS audit.

What Is a Nameserver Health Checker?

A Nameserver Health Checker is an online diagnostic tool that examines the DNS nameservers responsible for answering queries about a domain.

When someone visits a website, the Domain Name System (DNS) helps translate its domain name into the information needed to reach the appropriate server. Authoritative nameservers provide DNS records for domains they serve.

If these nameservers are unavailable, incorrectly configured, or providing inconsistent information, users may experience difficulty accessing websites or services associated with the domain.

Our checker focuses on authoritative DNS responses, SOA records, and consistency between the sampled nameservers.

How to Check Nameserver Health

Checking your domain’s nameservers takes a few simple steps.

  1. Enter your domain name. Type a domain such as example.com without https://, www unless it is part of the specific hostname you intend to check, or a page path.
  2. Click Check Nameservers. The tool discovers nameserver records using the hosting server’s DNS resolver.
  3. Review individual nameservers. Examine each tested server’s response status, IP address, response time, authoritative status, and SOA serial number where available.
  4. Compare the results. Look for failed responses, unavailable servers, or differences between SOA serial numbers.
  5. Investigate reported problems. Review your DNS hosting settings or contact your domain registrar or DNS provider if the results indicate an issue.

The tool can test up to four discovered nameservers and queries one eligible public IPv4 address for each.

Understanding Your Nameserver Health Results

The diagnostic results provide several technical details. Knowing what they mean helps you distinguish a genuine DNS problem from a temporary network issue.

Nameserver Hostname and IP Address

A nameserver hostname identifies a DNS server associated with your domain. Common examples include ns1.example.net and ns2.example.net.

The tool attempts to resolve each discovered nameserver to a public IPv4 address before sending a DNS query.

A nameserver without an eligible public IPv4 address cannot be tested by the current version. This does not automatically mean the nameserver is broken because IPv6-only configurations are outside this tool’s testing capabilities.

Authoritative DNS Response

An authoritative response indicates that the responding DNS server identifies itself as authoritative for the requested DNS information.

The checker examines the Authoritative Answer (AA) flag in the DNS response and looks for an SOA record.

An authoritative SOA response is a positive sign. However, it does not confirm that every record in the domain’s DNS zone is correct.

SOA Record and Serial Number

The Start of Authority (SOA) record contains administrative information about a DNS zone, including its serial number.

The checker compares SOA serial numbers returned by the sampled authoritative nameservers.

Matching serial numbers suggest that the sampled servers agree on this version identifier. Different serial numbers may indicate that a DNS update is still being distributed or that the servers are operating with different zone versions.

Matching serial numbers do not guarantee that every DNS record is identical.

DNS Response Time

Response time shows how long the tool’s hosting server took to receive a DNS response from a tested nameserver.

A lower response time indicates a quicker response during that particular query.

Response times can vary because of network routing, server load, geographical distance, and temporary network conditions. They are not a universal measure of DNS performance for visitors in Pakistan or other countries.

DNS Errors and Timeouts

The checker can identify certain DNS response errors, including:

  • SERVFAIL: The DNS server reports that it could not complete the query.
  • REFUSED: The server refuses to perform the requested operation.
  • NXDOMAIN: The server indicates that the requested DNS name does not exist.
  • Timeout: No usable DNS response was received within the tool’s configured time limit.

These findings require context. A timeout, for example, might be caused by restrictions on the website’s hosting network rather than an outage at the nameserver.

Common Nameserver Problems and How to Fix Them

ProblemPossible causeRecommended action
Nameserver not respondingServer outage, network filtering, or DNS connectivity issueCheck the DNS provider’s status and repeat the test
Different SOA serial numbersDNS updates in progress or inconsistent zone versionsReview recent DNS changes and check again
Non-authoritative responseIncorrect server configuration or unexpected DNS responseVerify the domain’s authoritative DNS setup
SERVFAIL errorDNS server processing or configuration problemReview DNS provider logs and configuration

Avoid changing nameserver settings solely because of one failed test. First confirm the problem through your registrar or DNS provider and, where possible, a second independent diagnostic method.

Why Is Nameserver Health Important?

Nameservers form an important part of a domain’s DNS infrastructure. Their reliability and configuration can affect several services.

Website accessibility: Visitors need DNS information to locate your website’s hosting infrastructure. If DNS resolution fails, they may be unable to reach the website even when its web server is working.

Email reliability: Email delivery depends on DNS records, including MX records. Nameserver failures or incorrect DNS information may disrupt mail routing.

DNS changes: When website owners change hosting providers or modify DNS records, consistent nameserver configurations help ensure that the intended records are served.

Troubleshooting: Nameserver checks help narrow down whether a reported connection problem is related to DNS, hosting, or another part of the network.

A domain can have healthy nameservers while its website remains unavailable for unrelated reasons, such as server downtime or application errors.

Nameserver Health vs. DNS Propagation

Nameserver health and DNS propagation are related but different.

A nameserver health check examines whether selected DNS servers respond and whether their authoritative information appears consistent.

DNS propagation refers to the process through which DNS changes become visible to different resolvers as cached information expires and new information is retrieved.

A nameserver may return the latest records while some recursive DNS resolvers still serve older cached data.

Our Nameserver Health Checker does not perform worldwide DNS propagation testing. It checks selected nameservers from a single hosting-server location.

What This Tool Can and Cannot Check

The Nameserver Health Checker is designed for focused DNS diagnostics.

It can discover nameservers through the hosting server’s resolver, query selected public IPv4 nameservers over UDP, inspect authoritative SOA responses, compare SOA serial numbers, and report certain DNS errors and timeouts.

It does not currently perform DNSSEC validation, IPv6 nameserver testing, TCP fallback, glue-record verification, independent parent-zone delegation checks, global DNS propagation tests, or complete DNS record comparisons.

The results should therefore be treated as a diagnostic starting point rather than a complete certification of your domain’s DNS configuration.

When Should You Check Your Nameservers?

A nameserver health check can be particularly helpful when:

  • Your website becomes unexpectedly inaccessible.
  • You recently changed your domain’s nameservers.
  • Your DNS provider reports an outage.
  • You are investigating inconsistent DNS answers.
  • You have moved your website to a new hosting provider.
  • You want to confirm authoritative DNS responses after configuration changes.

If you recently updated DNS settings, allow for resolver caching and your provider’s update process before assuming that differing results indicate a permanent problem.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Nameserver Health Checker free?

Yes. The NetTools Pakistan Nameserver Health Checker is intended to be available without account registration or payment.

Can I check any website’s nameservers?

You can enter a valid public domain name. However, the tool may not complete checks for every domain because of DNS restrictions, unavailable nameservers, unsupported configurations, or hosting network limitations.

What does a healthy nameserver result mean?

A passing result means that the sampled nameservers responded authoritatively to the tool’s SOA queries and returned matching SOA serial numbers. It does not prove that all DNS records are correct or that the domain is reachable worldwide.

Why do my nameservers show different SOA serial numbers?

Different serial numbers can indicate that DNS changes are still being synchronized or that the nameservers have inconsistent zone versions. If the difference persists unexpectedly, contact your DNS provider.

Can nameserver problems affect website loading?

Yes. DNS resolution problems can prevent a browser from locating the server responsible for a website. However, slow page loading can also result from web hosting performance, connection quality, or application issues.

Does this tool work with Pakistani domains?

The tool is designed to accept valid public domain names, including eligible .pk domains. Its ability to complete a check depends on the domain’s DNS configuration and the hosting server’s network access.

Check Your Domain’s DNS Configuration

Nameserver problems can affect website accessibility, email delivery, and DNS reliability. Checking authoritative responses and SOA consistency provides a useful starting point for identifying potential configuration issues.

Enter your domain in the Nameserver Health Checker above, review the results, and investigate any warnings with your DNS hosting provider.
