Convert bits, bytes and digital data units

Convert between bit (b), byte (B), decimal KB/MB/GB and binary KiB/MiB/GiB. Values update instantly as you type.

Non-negative numbers only; up to 18 digits before the decimal point and 12 after.

Rounded results are labeled with ≈. Tiny nonzero values are not silently shown as zero.

What is the difference between a bit and a byte?

A bit is one binary digit. A byte contains eight bits. The capitalization matters: a lowercase b usually represents bits, while an uppercase B represents bytes. For example, 8 megabits (Mbit) equals 1 megabyte (MB).

Internet connections are commonly described using megabits per second (Mbps). File sizes and downloads are commonly shown in megabytes (MB) or gigabytes (GB). These are different kinds of measurement: a data amount is not a transfer speed.

Decimal MB and binary MiB are not the same

Decimal prefixes such as kilo, mega and giga use powers of 1,000. Binary prefixes such as kibi, mebi and gibi use powers of 1,024. This converter labels them separately so you can choose the meaning you need.

  • 1 kB = 1,000 bytes; 1 KiB = 1,024 bytes.
  • 1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes; 1 MiB = 1,048,576 bytes.
  • 1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes; 1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes.
For example, a 1 GB data allowance equals 1,000 MB when GB is used in its decimal sense. Check the ISP or mobile operator’s own terms before assuming how a data plan is measured or billed.

How to use the converter

Type a non-negative number, choose its source unit, and select the unit you want. The answer and comparison table update automatically. Use the swap button to reverse the units, or select a common example. No number is sent to an external conversion service by this tool.

Can I convert Mbps to MB/s?

Yes, the same eight-to-one relationship applies when both measurements are rates: 80 Mbps = 10 MB/s mathematically. However, this tool converts data quantities, not rates, and a real download can be slower because of network conditions and overhead. Do not use the calculated rate as a guaranteed download speed.

Conversion standards

These definitions follow the decimal and binary prefix distinctions published by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). For technical background, see NIST SP 330 on decimal prefixes and NIST’s binary prefix reference.

Convert bits to bytes, megabytes to megabits, gigabytes to gibibytes, and other digital data units using the free Bits and Bytes Converter. Enter an amount, select the original unit and the unit you want, and get an instant result.

The calculator supports decimal units such as KB, MB, GB, and TB, alongside binary units such as KiB, MiB, GiB, and TiB. It also helps you understand the difference between internet connection speeds and file sizes.

How to Use the Bits and Bytes Converter

  1. Enter a value: Type the amount you want to convert, such as 100 or 1.5.
  2. Choose the starting unit: Select bits, bytes, MB, GB, MiB, or another supported unit.
  3. Select the destination unit: Choose the unit you want to convert into.
  4. Read the result: The converter updates automatically as you change the value or units.
  5. Copy or compare: Copy the converted result, reverse the units, or review the comparison table.

You can also adjust the displayed decimal precision. The converter accepts non-negative numbers, including fractional values. Results that require rounding are indicated accordingly.

What Is the Difference Between Bits and Bytes?

A bit is a binary digit, the smallest unit of digital information. A byte consists of eight bits.

The distinction matters when comparing internet speeds, downloaded files, and data allowances.

  • Bit (b): A unit commonly used when expressing data transmission rates.
  • Byte (B): A unit commonly used to measure file sizes and storage capacity.

Capitalization is important. For example, MB means megabytes, while Mbit means megabits.

1 byte = 8 bits

Therefore, 1 megabyte (MB) equals 8 megabits (Mbit), provided both use decimal prefixes.

Common Bits and Bytes Conversion Table

FromEquivalent
1 byte (B)8 bits
1 kilobyte (kB)1,000 bytes
1 kibibyte (KiB)1,024 bytes
1 megabyte (MB)1,000,000 bytes
1 mebibyte (MiB)1,048,576 bytes
1 megabyte (MB)8 megabits (Mbit)
1 gigabyte (GB)1,000 megabytes
1 gibibyte (GiB)1,073,741,824 bytes
1 gigabyte (GB)Approximately 0.9313 GiB

These values follow the standard decimal and binary prefix definitions.

MB vs MiB and GB vs GiB

Digital storage and data measurements use two different prefix systems.

Decimal units are based on powers of 1,000. For example:

  • 1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes
  • 1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes

Binary units are based on powers of 1,024. For example:

  • 1 MiB = 1,048,576 bytes
  • 1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes

This distinction explains why the same amount of data can produce different numerical values when displayed using GB and GiB.

For example, 1 GB is approximately 0.9313 GiB. The amount of data has not changed; only the measurement unit is different.

Always check which unit a software application, storage device, or service provider uses before comparing figures.

Understanding Mbps and MB/s

Internet connection speed and downloaded file size are related, but they are not the same measurement.

Internet service providers commonly advertise connection speeds in megabits per second (Mbps). File downloads are often displayed in megabytes per second (MB/s).

Because one byte contains eight bits, the theoretical relationship is:

MB/s = Mbps ÷ 8

For example, a 40 Mbps connection corresponds mathematically to 5 MB/s.

This is not a guaranteed download speed. Actual downloads can be slower because of network congestion, connection quality, protocol overhead, server performance, and other limitations.

The converter on this page handles quantities of data, such as MB and Mbit. It does not directly measure internet speed or test your connection.

Why These Conversions Matter in Pakistan

Bits and bytes are relevant when comparing broadband packages, mobile internet allowances, and downloaded files.

Consider a mobile data package advertised with a 10 GB allowance. Using decimal gigabytes, that equals 10,000 MB or 80,000 Mbit.

However, a mobile operator's billing rules, included data categories, and measurement conventions determine how its actual allowance is counted. Always consult the provider's package terms rather than assuming that a mathematical conversion explains its billing.

For home broadband connections, distinguishing Mbps from MB/s also helps you interpret download progress and compare connection-speed figures without confusing them with storage amounts.

How Does the Converter Calculate Results?

The converter first expresses the source amount in bits using the correct unit factor, then divides it by the factor for the selected destination unit.

For example, converting 5 MB into bits:

5 × 1,000,000 × 8 = 40,000,000 bits.

The calculator uses exact integer ratios internally to perform conversions, although fractional results may need rounding for display.

Unit conversions run through JavaScript in your browser. The converter itself does not require an external conversion API or upload your entered number to a calculation server.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many bits are in one byte?

There are exactly eight bits in one byte. To convert bytes into bits, multiply the number of bytes by eight.

Is 1 MB equal to 1,024 KB?

Not under decimal definitions. One MB equals 1,000 kB. In binary units, one MiB equals 1,024 KiB. Some software uses older or ambiguous terminology, so check the actual unit definition.

Is 100 Mbps equal to 100 MB/s?

No. A transfer rate of 100 Mbps equals 12.5 MB/s mathematically. Real-world download speeds may be lower.

Can I convert GB to GiB?

Yes. Select GB as the source unit and GiB as the destination unit. One decimal GB equals approximately 0.9313 GiB.
