Common Mobile Hotspot Problems and Solutions
Mobile Hotspot Is Not Showing on Other Devices
If your laptop or another phone cannot find your hotspot, first check that hotspot sharing is enabled.
On Android, locate the Wi-Fi hotspot option in your network or connection settings. On iPhone, open Settings > Personal Hotspot and check that Allow Others to Join is enabled.
Move the devices closer together and refresh the Wi-Fi network list. If the network remains invisible, check hotspot band compatibility. Some older devices cannot detect certain 5 GHz hotspot networks, making a supported 2.4 GHz option useful.
Hotspot Connected but No Internet
A device may successfully connect to a hotspot’s Wi-Fi network without being able to access the internet.
Start by turning off Wi-Fi on the phone providing the hotspot. Open a website using mobile data.
If the website does not load, investigate mobile coverage, data balance, mobile-data settings, or an operator restriction.
If mobile internet works on the phone but not on connected devices, reconnect the receiving device, restart both devices, and try another phone or laptop to isolate the problem.
Mobile Hotspot Keeps Disconnecting
Frequent disconnections can result from weak Wi-Fi reception, power-saving settings, an automatic hotspot timeout, or unstable mobile data.
Keep both devices nearby and check whether the phone’s hotspot switches off automatically when idle.
On Android phones that provide an automatic hotspot shutoff setting, review its configuration. Also check whether the receiving laptop or tablet is entering sleep mode.
If disconnections occur during active use, compare mobile internet performance directly on the phone to determine whether the underlying cellular connection is unstable.
Mobile Hotspot Internet Is Slow
Hotspot performance depends on the mobile network connection, local Wi-Fi conditions, and activity on connected devices.
First, compare browsing directly on the phone with browsing through its hotspot.
If both connections are slow, examine mobile reception, data allowances, and network conditions. If only connected devices are slow, move them closer, pause large downloads, and compare performance with one device connected.
Where supported, different hotspot Wi-Fi bands may provide different combinations of compatibility, range, and performance.
USB Tethering Is Not Working
USB tethering allows supported phones to share an internet connection with a computer through a USB cable.
If USB tethering does not work, check that your phone has mobile internet access and that the cable supports data transfer.
Android USB tethering is not supported with Mac computers according to Google’s Android guidance. An Android Wi-Fi hotspot may be a suitable alternative.
For iPhone USB tethering, check the computer’s device-trust permissions and relevant Apple software requirements, especially when using Windows.
Android and iPhone Hotspot Settings
Hotspot configuration differs between Android manufacturers and Apple devices.
Android: Hotspot settings are commonly located under Settings > Network & internet > Hotspot & tethering. Samsung and other manufacturers may use different menu names. Depending on the model, you may be able to change the hotspot name, password, Wi-Fi band, and automatic timeout.
iPhone: Open Settings > Personal Hotspot to review the sharing switch and Wi-Fi password. Supported iPhone models offer Maximize Compatibility, which may help older devices connect. However, enabling it can reduce performance and Wi-Fi security, so use it only when necessary.
Keep hotspot password protection enabled. Do not disable network security simply to make a connection work.
Check Your Mobile Network Before Troubleshooting Further
A mobile hotspot normally shares the phone’s mobile-data connection. Therefore, a problem with the SIM, cellular service, or mobile-data plan can also affect connected devices.
For mobile subscribers in Pakistan, check whether your internet package has remaining data and whether mobile internet works directly on your phone. If the problem continues, contact your mobile operator to check coverage, account restrictions, or tethering support.
Avoid changing advanced APN settings or resetting network settings unless simpler checks have failed. A network reset can remove saved Wi-Fi connections and other network configurations.
What This Troubleshooting Tool Can and Cannot Do
The Mobile Hotspot Troubleshooter provides guided recommendations based on the symptoms you select.
It does not automatically detect cellular signal strength, access SIM account information, inspect hotspot passwords, measure internet speed, or diagnose your mobile operator’s network.
You do not need to enter passwords, phone numbers, or account information into the tool.
Your selected answers help generate an on-screen troubleshooting checklist. The troubleshooting component does not submit those answers to a separate diagnostic service.
The tool is provided by NetTools Pakistan, an independent internet connectivity website. It is not an official Android, Apple, PTCL, PTA, or mobile operator troubleshooting service.
When Should You Contact Your Mobile Operator?
Contact your mobile operator if mobile internet does not work directly on the phone, your plan may not permit tethering, or multiple devices still cannot access internet through the hotspot after basic troubleshooting.
For device-specific problems, consult your phone manufacturer’s support instructions.
