Check whether a public IP address is associated with a VPN, proxy server, Tor exit node, private relay, or hosting network using our VPN or Proxy Indicator.
Enter a public IPv4 or IPv6 address to view available privacy-related indicators. You can also request a check of the IP address observed by this website.
The results come from an IP intelligence database. They indicate possible network associations rather than confirming which applications or privacy tools are running on a device.
Check whether a public IP address is associated with a VPN, proxy, Tor exit node, relay, or hosting network in an IP intelligence dataset. A result is an estimate based on provider records, not proof of what software is running on your device. Auto-check can reflect a CDN or reverse proxy rather than your own IP. The IP checked is sent to IPinfo by this site's server; the result may be cached for up to six hours.VPN or Proxy Indicator
How to Check an IP Address for VPN or Proxy Use
- Enter a public IP address. Paste the IPv4 or IPv6 address you want to examine. Alternatively, select the option to check the address observed by this website.
- Select Check IP. The checker requests classification information from its IP intelligence provider.
- Review the indicators. Depending on the available data plan, the result may show general anonymization or hosting flags, or separate VPN, proxy, Tor and relay indicators.
- Interpret the result carefully. An indicator is evidence of a possible association, not proof of how a particular device is connected.
For the most dependable self-check, enter the public IP address currently used by your connection. Automatic detection through a website may identify a reverse proxy or CDN address instead.
Understanding Your VPN or Proxy Check Results
The checker may display the following results:
| Result | What It Means |
|---|---|
| Possible anonymization service | The IP intelligence provider reports a possible connection to an anonymization service. |
| Hosting or data-center network | The IP is associated with hosting infrastructure. This alone does not establish VPN use. |
| No indicators reported | The provider did not identify the relevant indicators in its available records. |
| Lookup unavailable | The lookup could not be completed. No reliable classification is available from that attempt. |
When detailed classification data is available, you may also see separate indicators for VPN services, proxies, Tor exit nodes and private relays.
A negative result does not guarantee that a VPN or proxy is disabled.
What Is the Difference Between a VPN and a Proxy?
A Virtual Private Network (VPN) establishes an encrypted tunnel between your device and a VPN endpoint. Internet services commonly see the VPN server’s public IP address instead of the original connection’s public IP. Depending on the VPN configuration, some traffic may bypass the tunnel.
A proxy server acts as an intermediary for supported network requests. It may change the public IP address visible to websites, but it does not necessarily encrypt all traffic or protect every application.
Tor routes supported traffic through a network of relays to provide anonymity. Websites typically see the Tor exit node’s IP address rather than the user’s original public IP.
Private relay services can mask the original IP address for supported traffic, although their coverage depends on the service and device configuration.
These technologies work differently, so an IP address classification cannot explain every aspect of your connection’s privacy or security.
Can This Tool Tell Whether My VPN Is Active?
Not with certainty.
The VPN or Proxy Indicator examines information associated with an IP address. It does not inspect installed applications, browser extensions, device settings or VPN connection logs.
A VPN may be active without appearing in the provider’s records. Conversely, an IP address may be classified as a possible VPN or proxy endpoint even when the person using it has not knowingly enabled either service.
If you want to investigate your own VPN connection, compare your public IP address before and after connecting to the VPN. Then check both addresses using this tool. A changed IP address can help you identify whether your apparent internet endpoint has changed, but it does not by itself confirm that all traffic is protected.
Why Might the VPN or Proxy Detection Be Incorrect?
IP intelligence databases classify addresses using available network information. Their classifications can change as addresses are reassigned, providers update infrastructure or new privacy services appear.
Several factors can affect the result:
- Shared public IP addresses: Multiple customers or devices may use the same public address through network address translation.
- New VPN servers: A recently introduced VPN endpoint may not yet appear in detection records.
- Data-center addresses: Hosting-network classification is not sufficient evidence that a VPN is running.
- Split tunneling: Only selected applications may use a VPN connection.
- Outdated classification data: An IP address may have changed use since it was last categorized.
For these reasons, treat the checker as a network-information tool rather than a definitive test of privacy or security.
Privacy and Data Processing
When you submit an IP address, NetTools Pakistan’s WordPress server processes the request and sends the address to IPinfo for classification.
The plugin may temporarily cache classification results for up to six hours to reduce repeat requests. The plugin does not create a permanent lookup history, although server logs and the external provider’s data practices may apply separately.
Avoid entering private or sensitive network information unnecessarily. The checker accepts public IPv4 and IPv6 addresses, not private local-network addresses such as 192.168.1.1.
For more information about the underlying classifications, see the IPinfo Privacy Detection API documentation.
Check Your Connection with Confidence
A VPN or proxy indicator can help you understand how a public IP address is categorized, particularly when investigating unfamiliar network behavior or checking whether a privacy service appears to be associated with your connection.
Use the result alongside your device’s VPN settings and actual connection information rather than relying on one indicator alone.
