How the calculation works

Decimal: multiply gigabytes (GB) by 1,000 to get megabytes (MB). For example, 2.5 GB × 1,000 = 2,500 MB. This is the standard GB-to-MB conversion.

Binary: multiply gibibytes (GiB) by 1,024 to get mebibytes (MiB). For example, 2.5 GiB × 1,024 = 2,560 MiB. GiB and MiB are distinct units, not interchangeable labels for GB and MB.

For internet data allowances, check your provider's plan terms for how usage is measured and billed. This tool converts units only; it does not measure data usage or internet speed. Unit reference: NIST binary prefixes.

How Many MB Are in 1 GB?

There are 1,000 megabytes (MB) in 1 gigabyte (GB) under the decimal system.

A gigabyte contains 1,000,000,000 bytes, while a megabyte contains 1,000,000 bytes. Dividing one billion by one million gives 1,000.

This conversion is useful when comparing file sizes, internet data allowances, and digital storage quantities.

Some computers and applications use binary measurements. In that system, the corresponding units are gibibytes (GiB) and mebibytes (MiB), with 1 GiB equal to 1,024 MiB.

GB to MB Conversion Formula

To convert gigabytes to megabytes, multiply the number of gigabytes by 1,000.

Formula:

MB = GB × 1,000

For example, to convert 3.5 GB to MB:

3.5 × 1,000 = 3,500 MB

Therefore, 3.5 GB equals 3,500 MB.

You can also reverse the calculation by dividing megabytes by 1,000. For example, 2,500 MB equals 2.5 GB.

GB to MB Conversion Table

The following table shows common gigabyte values converted into megabytes using the decimal standard.

Gigabytes (GB)Megabytes (MB)
0 GB0 MB
0.5 GB500 MB
1 GB1,000 MB
2 GB2,000 MB
2.5 GB2,500 MB
5 GB5,000 MB
10 GB10,000 MB
20 GB20,000 MB
50 GB50,000 MB
100 GB100,000 MB

For any value not listed in the table, enter the amount in the calculator above to get the result.

What Is the Difference Between 1,000 and 1,024?

The difference comes from decimal and binary measurement systems.

Decimal units (GB and MB) use powers of 1,000. This means 1 GB equals 1,000 MB.

Binary units (GiB and MiB) use powers of 1,024. This means 1 GiB equals 1,024 MiB.

For example:

  • 2.5 GB = 2,500 MB
  • 2.5 GiB = 2,560 MiB

These calculations use different units. A gigabyte and a gibibyte are not identical amounts of data.

The distinction matters because some operating systems and older software use GB or MB labels when displaying quantities calculated using binary units.

Our converter separates the two systems so you can choose the correct calculation rather than assuming all units follow the same standard.

How to Use the GB to MB Converter

Select Decimal (GB → MB) to convert gigabytes into megabytes. Enter your amount in the input field. The calculator automatically displays the converted result.

For binary measurements, select Binary (GiB → MiB). The calculator then uses 1,024 as the conversion factor.

You can select a common amount using the quick-value buttons, copy a valid result, or reset the calculator.

The tool accepts non-negative numbers, including zero, with up to six decimal places. Its maximum supported input is 1,000,000,000. Empty entries, negative numbers, and incorrectly formatted values display a validation message instead of a misleading result.

GB to MB Conversion for Internet Data Packages in Pakistan

Internet packages in Pakistan may include data allowances expressed in gigabytes. Converting these amounts into megabytes can help you compare an advertised allowance with file sizes or data usage displayed in MB.

For example, a hypothetical mobile data package with a 15 GB allowance represents 15,000 MB under the decimal standard.

If a downloaded file is 750 MB, that represents 0.75 GB of data using the same units.

However, the amount deducted from an actual package depends on your provider’s usage accounting, package conditions, and how your device or application reports data. The file size alone may not represent all data transferred during a download.

This calculator converts data units. It does not check your remaining balance, measure data consumption, or determine internet charges.

GB, MB, Mbps and MB/s: What Is the Difference?

Gigabytes (GB) and megabytes (MB) measure amounts of digital data. Megabits per second (Mbps) and megabytes per second (MB/s) describe data transfer rates.

A byte contains eight bits, so the capitalization matters:

UnitMeaning
GBGigabyte, a quantity of data
MBMegabyte, a quantity of data
MbMegabit, equal to one-eighth of a megabyte
MbpsMegabits per second, a data transfer rate
MB/sMegabytes per second, a data transfer rate

For example, a connection advertised at 40 Mbps has a theoretical transfer rate of 5 MB/s. Actual file downloads can be slower because of network conditions, protocol overhead, server performance, and other factors.

A GB to MB conversion does not calculate internet speed or predict how long a download will take.

Common Questions

Is 1 GB equal to 1,000 MB or 1,024 MB?

Under standard decimal definitions, 1 GB equals 1,000 MB. Under binary definitions, 1 GiB equals 1,024 MiB. The binary units have different names to distinguish them from decimal units.

Is 500 MB equal to 0.5 GB?

Yes. Under the decimal standard, 500 MB equals 0.5 GB, or half a gigabyte.

How many MB are in 10 GB?

10 GB equals 10,000 MB. Multiply 10 by 1,000 to obtain the result.

Can I use this converter for mobile internet packages?

Yes. You can convert advertised GB allowances into decimal MB values. Check your mobile network provider’s terms for how data consumption is recorded, rounded, or charged.

Does the calculator use my internet data?

The conversion is calculated in your browser without contacting an external conversion API. It does not download a test file or measure your internet connection. Loading the webpage itself may still use a small amount of data.
